Huge fan is disappointed

Tim, if you're reading this, I have a great idea for you at the end of this review. No sarcasm, no snark.

DISCLAIMER: I am a Tim Ferriss apologist. I've listened to almost every episode of his podcast. Own his books. Have been following him since 4 Hour Work Week came out.

Tim's podcast has rewired my brain. My life is measurably better because of what I've learned. Literally. I have hereditary cholesterol problems and my forays into a ketogenic lifestyle dropped my particle count from ~1950 to ~1225. There are many other great things that have come as a result of my exposure to Tim's podcast, too many to list here.

When he announced TOOLS OF TITANS, I was ecstatic. I pre-ordered this book in September.

I'm sad to say that I'm non-plussed, borderline disappointed.

On one hand, I love having a "totem" of something that has changed my life so profoundly. To that end, I am happy to own the book.

On the other hand, it does not deliver on its promise. This is supposedly a "recipe book" (according to page xvi in the Foreword).

It is no such thing.

If I want to bake an apple pie, I go to the Table of Contents, I look up apple pie, I turn to that page.

You cannot do that in this book.

Tim has amazing things to say about meditation. A few guests on his podcast have amazing things to say about meditation (Sam Harris, Naval Ravikant, Kevin Rose, etc.).

But there is no central place to which you can turn to find out the collected wisdom of the many guests who have delved into this topic.

The same goes for investing. The same goes for particular health hacks.

In fact, there's not even one central place in the book that gives a list of the commonalities between the guests. That's a HUGE missed opportunity.

THE ADVICE:

Make a second edition. Soon. It doesn't even have to add new content. Just tighten this up and make it so that you can read about certain topics in a centralized place. If there are parts that don't fit, maybe have an author section at the back... but, dang.

FINAL THOUGHT:
Millionaires become millionaires (in part) because they've learned to say "no." They have the discipline to turn down the good, so that they can pursue (and achieve) the great.

This book is just too too too much good. It doesn't tell you what is great. It will leave you chasing dozens upon dozens of random tactics and thoughts in a dozen different fields.

It might teach the tactics and routines and habits of world-class performers, but there's FAR TOO MUCH here to make it valuable in showing YOU how to achieve those heights. And, if there is ONE person that you could model to become like them in their field... there is FAR TOO LITTLE here to actually help you on your way.

Good not great, and I want great from Tim.

Tim's previous books are incredible and you should buy them all. Those books show incredible mission, clarity, and voice.

This book suffers from the expectations of his previous work--Tim is honest about presenting "Tools of Titans" as sort of a glimpse of his journals/notes from his life's work, but this book loses nearly everything we've come to expect.

First, due to the content (it's a compendium of quips/quotes/summations from past work and in particular, his podcasts) there's no sense of mission and the book feels scattered. Yes, you can sort of pick this up book and it reads like a reference digest, but Tim's voice fades and it feels without purpose. It's WebMD with a clouded personality...it's a bit like a bound website without the hyperlinking.

Next, keeping Tim's literary voice at the fringe makes the book far less interesting. His personality is buried, his sense of adventure and joyous curiosity isn't apparent, so we care less about the character and the journey. His books have always succeeded on those terms--he's made us excited about his life and why he does what he does, but here his character is almost non-existent.

Finally, although I don't think it's the case, the book doesn't seem challenging for Tim. I don't think he phoned it in, and I know trying to make sense of a lifetime's worth of notes (tools!) was incredibly challenging, but there's a part of me as a reader that expected much more channeled insight. He's shown he's capable of completely rethinking a problem or a lifestyle or a way of doing things, and this book isn't like that at all.

If you've read all of Tim's stuff and listened to a fair amount of his podcasts, this book is going to seem like familiar territory. Nice to have some of the best nuggets all in one spot, but I don't buy his books out of convenience. If you're new to Tim Ferris, this is probably a decent starting point.

Not organized at all.. not a "Tim Ferriss" book

It pains me not to give this 5 stars. I have been a big Tim Ferriss fan for the past 6 years, I really appreciate his way of thinking and the 4 Hour Work week and 4 Hour Body really helped me to open my eyes to the possibilities of life. Been cooking with 4 Hour Chef lately and it's great! But this.. this isn't a Tim Ferriss book.. this is just a book. You start on page 1 and read to the end and say "okay, there was a few interesting things" and then put it down after looking over 2 or 3 interesting ideas one last time.
This needs to be organized by topic, not by name. I know barely any of these names and I can never find enough info on the topic I am looking for..
I know the concept is for us to emulate these cool people, but he just spends way too much time on the people and not enough on the lessons learned.

Sweet and charming!

Rob was a former jock in a small Wisconsin town, and is now a former professional jock and successful restaurant owner in Chicago. Elizabeth was the self-conscious, chubby, stuttering A-student he remembered from high school -- except, now she's not.

These days she's a successful cookbook writer, and while still self-conscious about her speech, she's grown into a far more interesting woman than Rob expected. And now that they've been thrown together by circumstances (guilted into managing their uncles' ice cream parlor while the two crafty business partners are out of the country) they're finding some things never change, while others bring sweet and sexy surprises.

I'll admit it - I'm a big fan of Marilyn Brant's writing (practically a stalker by now, lol) and she didn't disappoint with this release.

"On Any Given Sundae" is a (dare I say it?) sweet book about friendship, family, and food - as well as love, limitations, and lust - all delightfully served in a frothy, fun manner. The characters are quirky, believable, and had me laughing out loud and cheering for them all the way.

The buildup of the relationship between Rob and Elizabeth was perfectly done - not too slow, not too fast - and (unlike some romances) their misunderstandings were completely understandable.

This book left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling - not to mention a growling tummy. "On Any Given Sundae" should come with a warning: May increase appetites for food and sex; don't read while hungry. :)

Pleasant light and fluffy read

This story was in a romance collection I just got around to reading. It is a light, fluffy romance with no swear words and no graphic sex scenes. The author made a few errors, but not as many as most books have now. The story line is straight forward and mostly predictable, but it makes for a pleasant read. I was getting kind of tired of over-dramatized romances that cater to teens anyway. There is no real depth to the characters, but you know who the good ones are and who the opponents are very easily. Nothing outlandish or far-fetched.
This would be a nice plane ride or beach read. You wouldn't even mind too much if the person next to you read over your shoulder.

I read this book in one day! Marilyn Brant has written a fun, charming romance that completely swept me in. I loved both leads- Lizzie and Rob, the ice-cream parlor setting, the crazy uncles, the whole thing! Take this to the beach and come back with a smile on your face!

The Missing Link in our Culture - Logic!

Brilliant, engaging, well-written, informative. I took Logic in Jr. College w/Mr. Soccio as the instructor using this book as text, and after losing my copy I wanted to have one handy. If you want to learn more about how to think - not what to think, but how to use your brain to cut through the fluff and distractions we face every day from the media and in our lives - this book is the real deal. It should be required reading for everyone with a brain IMHO.

Not worth $247.00 of course - but you can find it other places at a more sane (logical!) price.

While the thoughts expressed helped to improve critical thinking, too much was left open for debate. A book of this nature should not be left open to such broad interpretation and the words chosen or researched so that multiple meanings are not prevelant.

A scholarly yet very readable study

This book truly brings these two highly interesting Hindu dieties to life. Kinsley clearly illustrates the various truths each deity represents within the Hindu tradition. The reader is not only left well educated about Kali and Krishna but about the rich character of the Hindu religious tradition as a whole. Perhaps the most enjoyable book I've ever read concerning Hindu religion.

Wonderful Study of Two Impressive Deities

I have always had trouble relating to Krisha, even though I read many books, commentaries and scriptures about Him, attended a Vaisnava temple for many months, and spent numerous hours chanting His mantras in an attempt to crack the mystery of why this Deity is so ravenously popular. I enjoyed the stories of His pastimes, and greatly appreciated the art and iconography that surrounded Him - but the deeper implications were simply lost for some reason.

This book really brought home to me WHY Krishna so captured the people's hearts, as it showed a completely different perspective on the energies inherant to His workship. While the familiar themes, of course, remained the same, Kinsley throws a new light on the matter that was fresh and much needed.

As a Shakta, though, I obviously also adored the latter studies of Kali as well. They also bring up aspects and interpretations of Her worship that are not too commonly presented in other texts.

While this book is an academic text, it is easy and enjoyable to read, and not at all dry.

I highly recommend this book to any student of Hindu religion and spirituality, anyone wondering "what's the deal with Krishna", or even "who is this Kali that everyone's talking about". Those who have a general intrest in world religions and mythology will eat this one up, too. Spiritual seekers who wish to expand their perspectives on how divinity can and is experienced by hundreds of million, and how the seeminly contradictory aspects of the divine can be embraced and adored will find this study an excellent read as well.

A wonderful study of two Hindu deities

Kinsley's book is perhaps the most enjoyable work on Hinduism that I've ever had the pleasure to read. In it the author both explains the history of each deity and how they crystalize certain overarching truths of the Hindu worldview. The effect is both a complex understanding of Kali and Krishna's importance within Hinduism as well as a greater appreciation of Hinduism in its totality.

Great recipes that make fats/oils not only favors to flavor but healthy for you, too!

Lisa Howard is truly a culinary artist and expert, and on top of that, she is a researcher and an author that cares about her readers. What I find fascinating in this book is that it not only provides beautiful recipes, it also informs wise readers about the best way to use oils and fats safely for health and well-being.

"Fat" as a general classification has for far too long been generally maligned. This has unfortunately resulted in a population of people who have ignored oils and fats and have been missing out on their health benefits (yes benefits!), inadvertently misusing them (resulting in health risks), and who are sadly unaware of the dangers of damaged fats/oils (heat, light, time, pressure, and chemical processing result in not only rancidity but can promote premature aging, inflammation, resistant weight-loss, and can contribute to many disease processes). Fortunately, fats/oils used wisely can help with health (for example, certain fats are anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, facilitate much needed fat-soluble nutrient absorption, and stimulate satiety (so you don't overeat)) ... What an eye opener!

This book is definitely an eye opener and extremely interesting! I myself am quite knowledgeable about healthful dietary intake but Lisa Howard has uncovered the sad truth about what Big Food has done to fats that we purchase. Many of us have gotten it wrong, including nutritionists. Kudos to Lisa for her investigative efforts that have revealed the very sad truth about dietary oils/fats. The recipes are nutritious AND tasty and it is worth buying just to become informed about things that we would not otherwise be privy to. The recipes are a bonus and will help with proper nutrition and weight control!

I found this book very interesting and extremely informative. Sections describing the various oils and how they are produced is very helpful when shopping. The sections about oil temperature and various oils reaction to heat for cooking is valuable. Anyone who who cooks with oil or prepares dishes such as salads using various oils will find this a reference they will come back to again and again. I enjoyed it and keep it near my cooking area for future reference.

About the Author
Robert V. S. Redick's The Red Wolf Conspiracy was a finalist for the 2008 Locus Award for Best First Novel, and according to SFX magazine, one of the top ten science fiction and fantasy releases of the year. Book II of this series, The Ruling Sea, was rated the #1 fantasy of 2009 by Fantasy Book Critic. A former international development researcher, Redick worked most recently for the antipoverty organization Oxfam. He lives in western Massachusetts.

Redick Keeps Getting Better

Redick just continues to hone his craft, and The River of Shadows is a beautiful piece of literature. The Chathrand Voyage series is my second favorite series of all-time (Rothfuss' Kingkiller series is my #1 all-time favorite). Redick has an incredible ability to suck you into this world that is engrossing, intriguing, and consuming. His characters are well-developed and complex; relatable, likable, yet flawed (but not so much that you dislike them, which is often the case these days). And this applies to all of the characters in these books...there just aren't many un-developed or under-developed characters. Each has its own unique identity, character, strengths, flaws, etc. The world is brilliantly realized and sucks you in completely.

Those things are all true of each of the books of this series. Each one can stand on its own, but are definitely part of a larger whole. The overall story being told here is interesting and it has a lot of great twists and turns...very few of them predictable, and all of them add to the story and keep your interest. Redick is great at plotting. The pace moves quickly, but he knows how to balance the fast-paced "action" scenes with the scenes of reflection...a good balance between the "fantastic" and the "mundane" (a better word might be "realistic"). Holywood movies could learn a lot from Redick about how to craft a story.

This book is fantastic. Should you read the first two books in the series before reading this? It's not necessary, I don't think...there's enough of a summation of the earlier books included herein (though not so much that I was annoyed, as I often am when the beginning of a sequel spends 1/4 of itself rehashing what has already happened in the previous volumes). But, it's hard for me to gauge that, since I HAVE read the first two books. Here's what I can say for sure...it would be well worth it to read the first two books anyway. All three are absolutely fantastic. Redick has an incredible talent, and these books are truly among the best out there. Highly, highly recommended!

Series Falters in This Third Volume

After perusing the reviews for this title, I realize that my poor opinion of this novel is in the minority. While I am almost finished with this book, I am struggling to complete it and do not know whether to persevere until the end. There are other novels I am eager to get to, and this one is just not up to par.

The first book in the series, The Red Wolf Conspiracy, was very enjoyable. The second book, The Ruling Sea, was not quite as good, but it was ok. This third volume, however, is not very good for several reasons. First, the plot has become too convoluted. The main plot involves the struggle of the main characters against the evil mage, Arunis, who seeks to obtain the Nilstone, a dark magical object that has the power to destroy the world. This novel finds the great ship Chathrand in the lands to the south of the Ruling Sea that have been long unknown to the people of the north. The author doles out information about these lands stingily, thus not filling out the setting of this novel very well.

The author keeps introducing subplots that are not well developed. The character Felthrup, a talking, intelligent rat, learns to enter a dreamworld called the River of Shadows. Later in the novel, the main characters must leave the great ship on a quest to find the earthly entrance to the River of Shadows so they can stop Arunis' evil plans. Another part of the plot involves the reception that the humans receive from the empire in the south, Bali Adro. Humans have lost their intelligence and ability to speak in these lands and have become little more than animals. The southern empire has been hijacked by evil mages and has become obsessed with conquering the world. While all of these plotlines may eventually fit into the story as it is written, the whole novel could really use some tightening up. The plotting feels neither coherent nor cohesive.

The characterization in this novel is well-done at times, but is weak overall. Some characters disappear for long stretches of the novel, only to reappear briefly as central to the story or a subplot. One example is Neda, the long-lost sister of one of the main characters, Pazel. After she was introduced, I thought she would become a major character, but she has scarcely been mentioned since reuniting with her brother. He hardly ever mentions her. You would think that he would show more concern for her after finding her again. There seems to be no point to her storyline.

While this is just one small example, it is indicative of the whole novel. There seems to be a lot of extraneous characters and plot lines that either go nowhere or are inadequately developed. Pacing suffers, with nothing of note happening for long stretches in the story (at least it seems that way). The character interaction and dialogue is annoying and illogical at times. The author seems to create conflict among the main characters when none is necessary, and it just jarring and irritating to the reader, rather than necessary to the story.

Like many fantasy series that started off great, e.g., The Song of Fire and Ice, The Wheel of Time, The Sword of Truth, The Sword of Shadows, this series seems to have stumbled under its own weight. Ultimately, I felt that this book had serious problems, and those problems kept me from enjoying it. I cannot recommend this novel, even to fans of the series.

At least they finally get off the effing ship

I really enjoyed the first volume in this series (The Red Wolf Conspiracy) tremendously. It was a fresh-feeling story, had a lot of energy, some interesting characters, and a relatively intricate plot. In the second novel (The Ruling Sea), the plot seemed to go from intricate to pointlessly complex. The Ruling Sea also suffered from having the characters cooped up on a ship, which seemed to limit the direction the story could go in (although there have been very good novels set entirely on a ship).

By the time I got into The River of Shadows, I find I'm just tired of the whole thing. The parade of extraneous, and in many cases barely distinguishable, characters. The endless series of confrontations with the main bad guys that end anticlimactically (as they can't be wrapped up, since we've got at least one more book in the series!).

This volume in the series feels like the middle seasons of the television show "Lost," where big circular plotlines were added to pad out what was intended to be a 1- or 2-season run. I'm done.
