Still good to have as a second opinion

Compared to the NG guide book...there were a lot more pictures and not as much detailed information on traveling to/in Vietnam. Still good to have as a second opinion.

I used this book throughout the country and really enjoyed its accuracy, photos, and descriptions. Do understand though, that the EW series travel books are basically more in-depth colorful travel brochures. But for the traveler on a typically American worker's-length vacation, they are superb. EW books are the catalyst for fully exploring foreign countries/cities.

Definitely worthwhile

A few of the pieces in this book are a bit hokey. I mean, John Philip Sousa may have fit the time frame, but I don't think of him as "romantic" at all.

Others are exquisite. Tony is one of the best uke arrangers out there. His CD with performances of his arrangements is really top notch and fun to listen to on its own.

If you've owned his other books, you already know you'd like this, too.

About the Author
Bryan Lawson is a Professor of Architecture at the University of Sheffield. He is however both an architect and a psychologist, which has enabled him to study the nature of the design process.

Interesting, but dense

I enjoyed a lot of the points made in this book, however, there were a few problems with it. I found the book, at certain times, to be extremely thought-provoking about my own process, bringing to mind things that I may not have noticed if I hadn't read about it. Still, much of it felt architecture focused, and not entirely applicable to other disciplines. Additionally, Lawson seems overly academic, especially in that he does not want to propose a theory that could be seen as "wrong," meaning that what he proposes often falls on the side of boring. The book, as well, is dense, and definitely written by an Academic. Many times the points in the book are beleaguered, made too many times, and supported by one too many pieces of evidence. At times, I wish it was just a tad snappier in places.

Don't buy this book

I was very disappointed with this book. Now, I'm a great collector of books on this subject line - thinking and problem solving. I'm an architect. I am forever curious as to how people think we designers think. I'm also interested in how to teach young designers to think, so I'm always looking for new tools. The discussion in this book doesn't really offer either for me. I found little that was accurate about how I design or even discussions on how people in general solve problems. I also found little that I might use to assist young designers even though the author claims to deal with young designers as a professor and an indication that the book was written for just such a purpose. Chapter Five, "Measurement, criteria and judgment" was pure unmitigated tripe. I forced myself to read this book and as a result of what I read I do not recommend that anyone buy this book. I wasted my money, don't waste yours. Instead, if I were to recommend one book for these purposes, I'd recommend "Sparks of Genius - Thirteen Thinking Tools of the World's Most Creative People" by Michele and Robert Bernstein.

Tons of Info - Useful Conclusions: Not as Much

Pros: The author brought up many good points about the design process and how it has changed over the past few decades, which was a nice history lesson. I was introduced to many `famous' designers in this book and now have real people to research should I pursue this further. The insight into the designers' minds was inspiring and thought-provoking.

Cons: The author is a little gun-shy when it comes to making actual concrete decisions. I understand that there are no earthly absolutely, but you have to make a decision some time. No real conclusions were drawn other than ~those who are creative... are creative, but that we can all be that way if we stick to it~. Examples and postulates were stated frequently, and I would hazard to guess unnecessarily so.

Assessment: Worth a quick view if on sale, in the library, or at a friend's place. Would be kind of a stretch to pay the $24 on Amazon.

Lots of cool robots - lots of great rhymes
lots of great reading, all of the time.

Captured the essence of the robot within (my daughter).
My daughter loves it - she loves all robots and these are just what the doctor, I mean, *robot* ordered.

Easy for my daughter to read and get excited. Brilliant to see an author who is in touch with the wonder of childhood and bring it to life for us all to enjoy.

My first grader loved this book! A lot of the words were very easy for him to read and it was very engaging for him since he does like robots!

I put this on my kindle keyboard and read it too her, she was intrugued by it considering she is a 1 year old and it was in black and white. I put it on my Ipad and and the color really helped her enjoy it more.

About the Author
Dan Abnett is the author of the Horus Heresy novels The Unremembered Empire, Know No Fear and Prospero Burns, the last two of which were both New York Times bestsellers. He has written almost fifty novels, including the acclaimed Gaunt’s Ghosts series, and the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies. He scripted Macragge’s Honour, the first Horus Heresy graphic novel, as well as numerous audio dramas and short stories set in the Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer universes. He lives and works in Maidstone, Kent.

Abnett is Gifted

I didn't like this book nearly as much as First & Only (or Eye of Terror), but it was still a fun read. I really got sucked in to the characters from the first book and wanted to follow their further exploits. While First & Only had a strong plot that held it together, this book is more of a collection of war stories. They read like they may have already appeared in Inferno! (the Warhammer fiction zine). I'm not a big fan of straight combat/action fiction, so this was somewhat disappointing. What saves it is the fact that Abnett is a truly great writer who really rises above this genre of game fiction. The war stories are interrupted by these almost poetic tableaus of the Tanith troops between battles: A soldier obsessively cleaning his gun, the MASH unit quiet and waiting for the coming onslaught of carnage, a General sharing coffee and small talk with the company cook. These bits are very effective counterpoint to the ferocious battles of the surrounding chapters.
I'm hooked. I can't wait for the next "Gaunt's Ghosts" book, I just hope that Abnett spends more time developing a compelling story arc and less time on the battlefield reportage.

A good sequel to Tanith First and Only

Dan Abnett follows up his first Gaunt's Ghosts novel --- Tanith First and Only --- with Ghostmaker and he does a good job to keep fans of the original hooked with the story. It doesn't rise above the original, but the characterization of major and secondary characters are explored abit further.

Ghostmaker also further explains the current Crusade campaign the regiment is on. Politics become an issue as well. Jealousy from other regiments with a more storied history helps add abit of a subplot to the main story. Gaunt and his men are put through the wringer as they accept missions or put into dangerous situations that slowly dwindle their numbers. This is sad and poignant for the fact that without a homeworld to call home anymore, they have no way of replenishing their regiment like other Imperial Guard units. This also means that for every Tanith who falls in battle, more of their homeworld and people's culture disappear. It really adds meaning to the title of Ghostmaker.

I would recommend this book to those who have read the first and still contemplating as to whether to pick up this sequel.

I don't know why people don't like this book, it's awesome!

This is the second book in the Gaunts Ghost series, and while it's not the best Ghost's book, it's still a five star book. With a huge number of different characters in the books, I think this was a great idea for the series. Dan abnett was able to give more dimension to the characters and there past, which he brought to life in First and only.
Yes, this book is pretty much a collection of short stories and each story focus's on a different character. I personally don't like short stories, but the way Ghostmarker was written was awesome. The thing I don't like short stories is there short! they don't leave any time for character development and in less then an hour they are done. In ghostmaker, the short stories were there to show the character, and show their past, and why they are so attached to it.
Gaunt's Ghost is one of my favorite series of novels, and Ghostmaker is a must read for any fan of warhammer 40k or military sci-fi.
