Review
The magic of the traditional Tarot comes to life in this praise winning book by Dr. Yoav Ben-Dov: physicist, philosopher of science and the first tarot teacher in Israel (since 1979). Learn the significance of the ancient symbols which are common to old and new decks, how to conduct the reading session, and how to look at the cards in order to see the complete picture.winner of the 2013Tarosophists awardBook of the Year (self published)

From the Author
what's in the book:

  • Tarot history- first centuries, French and English schools, the New Age.
  • Session dynamics- theory and practice. Shuffling, spreading and interacting with the querent.
  • How to read- looking at the cards and considering the complete picture, rather than using fixed interpretations. This is the "Open Reading" approach, which can be applied to any type of cards.
  • The symbolic language- suggested meanings for colors, numbers, types of figures...
  • Interpretations for all the 78 cards- philosophical, psychological and practical. These are based on the traditional illustrations, on historical iconography (symbols used and known in medieval and renaissance art), and on parallel symbols in other cultures or domains.
  • Numerous examplesof spread interpretations.
  • Various references and explanations- modern physics (Quantum Mechanics, Chaos Theory, Thermodynamics), schools of philosophy (Pythagorean, Aristotelian, Neo-Platonist, Alchemical, Hindu, Chinese..), saints and gods (Catholic, Hindu, Greek and Roman..), Cabbalistic symbolism, Talmudic citations, and more.
  • Tables- Hebrew Letters (French and English methods), minor suit correspondences.
  • Short interpretations- a separate section at the end, for quick reference in a reading.
  • Card illustrations- featuringCBD Tarot de Marseille, a faithful reproduction of the "standard" traditional Tarot. As this was the basis of (almost) all the decks in use today, the book can help you understand the deep significance of cards in other decks as well.
More details, card pictures in full color, and additional materials to read and download are available at the websitecbdtarot.com.

From the Back Cover
The object of this book is threefold. First, a general introduction to the Tarot cards. Second, a practical guide to the "Open Reading" method, focusing on the look and feel of the cards rather than on fixed interpretations. Third, a detailed handbook for the classic version of the Tarot deck, the Tarot de Marseille.Whether you are a novice or an experienced Tarot reader, and whatever deck or reading method you are now using, this book is for you.

An outstanding book on reading the Tarot de Marseille
By Teheuti
It's been a long time since I was as excited and intrigued by a new 'how-to' book on reading the Tarot. Ben-Dov describes the Tarot as a work of art, through whose details a full range of human experiences can be revealed. The book features the Marseilles Tarot deck—a deck that's gaining greater interest and appreciation among English-speaking Tarotists. [Additionally, Ben-Dov has created what I believe to be the most elegant restoration of the classic Conver Marseille deck available, The CBD Tarot de Marseille, which process aided him in his close attention to detail in the cards.[

What has been notably missing in English Tarot literature are good, non-Waite-based meanings for the four suits. You need look no further. The focus here is on reading the cards through the scenarios one perceives when looking at the images. For the Majors, Ben-Dov says the possibilities are open. Nevertheless, he points out valuable interpretive perspectives derived from symbolic, historical and mythological associations, many of which I found both original and obvious (once-stated)—in other words, extremely helpful as kick-starter phrases for the cards. Through comparison and contrast among the Majors he shows how the cards can relate to one another. Emphasis is on the therapeutic approach, rather than being predictive or proscriptive. Providing an excellent introduction to practical reading issues, he stresses developing familiarity with psychological practices.

Previous authors offered one of three approaches to the Marseille Minor pip cards: 1) a straightforward transfer of the Waite-Smith Minor Arcana meanings to the Marseille deck, 2) a memorized set of meanings often derived from Etteilla, or 3) a personal synthesis of number-plus-suit meanings for each card. Ben-Dov bases his sensible Minor Arcana explications on the work of Alejandro Jodorowsky, emphasizing visual cues in the cards along with number, which make their arrangements 'sensible,' and easy to learn and build on. His descriptions of the thematic progression within the Major and Minor suits provide an immediate handle on each segment of the deck. In keeping with his therapeutic approach, the Court Cards represent attitudes and characteristics of the querent rather than other people, although there's nothing to stop you from applying them to others. I only wish that Ben-Dov had included sample readings utilizing the Minors like he did for the Majors, as his examples were so insightful.

Spreads are kept simple with some innovative approaches to working with both Major and Minor suit cards that are well-worth trying out. His simple instructions for creating your own spreads gives you an infinite palette of deeply meaningful options to choose from.

I have two pet peeves: Ben-Dov completely ignores the first two hundred years of Tarot's history when he describes the Marseille Tarot as the 'genuine model', with the 'true order' for the cards, saying it offers, "the most faithful and accurate representation of the ancient Tarot symbols." The oldest decks (15th century Italian) are quite different in style, and there were several different orders for the cards in its first century. It would be better to describe the Marseille-style decks as the most long-lasting, consistent design, which is not to be scoffed at. My second pet peeve involves misunderstandings of the Golden Dawn system of Tarot reading, resulting in minor errors that are not centrally relevant to this work. Personally, I think he should have left out his few Golden Dawn references or listed the differences in an appendix.

Overall, this book offers fresh, practical instructions for reading the Marseille Tarot that will give you a great appreciation for the details and special characteristics of this deck, as well as great insights into the reading process itself.

Open Reading = Up and Reading
By enrique enriquez
Anybody who has shuffled Yoav Ben Dov's tarot de Marseille feels at home. The images are crisp and gentle. The deck slips around with an ease that mirrors the flow of the symbolic universe, or perhaps, like a mirror where the symbolic universe flows.

Feeling at home in a house of mirrors is an image I would like to keep in mind while reading Yoav 's book: Tarot, The Open Reading. Tarot books are like amusement parks: we enter them knowing exactly what we will find while secretly hoping to be surprised. Yoav's book delivers the thrill of the familiar while packing the bang of a few surprises. The eternal beginner gets to ride the Bumper Cars of tarot's history and the Mechanical Bull of tarot meanings. Those who suffer from vertigo can take it slow and go around in the Carousel of court cards or take a spin in the Teacups of pips. Yoav takes both the French and the English traditions through a Tunnel of Love inviting us to peek at their (rather incestuous) hanky panky.

The main ride is, of course, the Marseille Tarot itself by means of what Yoav calls the "Open Reading", a Reverse Bungee whose admission ticked reads "everything is a symbol". This is Yoav's way of telling us to hang onto our hats. The symbolic universe sweeps us off our feet way before the cards come out of the box. This is a palatable idea for those of us who feed from abstractions. As every part of our bodies becomes arcane, every gesture we make with them can be interpreted.

Through the open reading the tarot becomes infinite. Yoav accomplishes this without cracking any eggs. His voice is always kind, always patient. To us it may seem as if this book accompanies his tarot when in truth he restored the tarots to accompany his book. After years of work to make it whole we now have access to Yoav's vision.

Three good reasons to buy this book
By Matteo
After reading dozens of books on the subject – or should I say, lists of random meanings and rituals spiced up with rambling new age-ish gibberish- some people might feel like giving up on studying tarot, unless, of course, they find the right book to read. I honestly think there are very few books on tarot that are worth their price, and Mr. Ben Dov’s The Open Reading is one of those. Since much has been said in the previous reviews, I will just list my three good reasons to buy the book:

- An anti-dogmatic and compelling approach
While some chapters of the book are devoted to finding the possible meanings of each card, this is done in order to introduce the reader to the author’s method of understanding tarot. But, as a matter of fact, there is no such a thing as an absolutly “correct” meaning. This is not to say that it’s unimportant that a card shows up instead of another one just because the same thing could be signified by different spreads: quite the contrary, as we are invited to think why that card showed up, without having some self-proclaimed guru think and feel on our behalf. Reading this book is about mastering a (good) method, not our memory skills.

- A deep and fun way of enhancing one’s intuition, creativity, awareness
One might feel that Ben Dov’s method ultimately leads to total chaos. However, by stating that “everything is a sign”, the author exhorts us to pay special attention to our feelings and intuitions and trust them. Of course, previous knowledge and careful study of the deck is needed (e.g. knowing that the page of swords is left-handed before getting to read for someone else might really help), but while it is always good to have some ready-to-use meanings in case we run low on inspiration (it’ll be another sign, after all), most of the work is done when we are able to relate to the spread, which means we can understand our own reaction to the cards.

- It “works” with every deck
I tend to be very picky when it comes to tarot decks, and I’m a Marseilles guy as a rule. The Open Reading was specifically written for the author’s lovely restoration of Conver’s Tarot of Marseilles (which can be bought on his website). However, Ben Dov’s book could prove very helpful even to those who prefer reading on a Rider Waite, or Wirth, or Italian style deck. In fact, as I mentioned above, this book is not about learning meanings: it’s about learning how tarot cards could mean something.

Professor Higginbotham is the author of Righteous Discontent: The Women's Movement in the Black Baptist Church: 1880-1920 (1993), which won numerous book prizes and was also included among The New York Times Book Review's Notable Books of the Year in 1993 and 1994.

Dr. Higginbotham has received numerous awards. In April 2003 she was chosen by Harvard University to be a Walter Channing Cabot Fellow in recognition of her achievements and scholarly eminence in the field of history. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History awarded her the Carter G. Woodson Scholars Medallion in October 2008, and the Urban League awarded her the Legend Award in August 2008.

Of my many history courses, this is the book ...
By Virgil L. Conn III
Of my many history courses, this is the book that I have learned the most from. In today's high tension race relations this book gives insight to the heritage that is so commonly misunderstood. Yes, we have come closer to unity but we also have so much more to go. History is repeating itself but under the cover of political correctness and misrepresentation of the facts. You have to read this and take in all of the atrocities that has lead up to the resentment that both sides must understand and overcome.

Premier Book on black History
By Lady Dee
This book is a treasure originally written by a noted author and historian who is now deceased. The book has been revised and updated but the content and style remain. My daughter is using the book because it is required for her African American History course. She is finding it immensely informative and learning a lot about African American history. I remember this book from my college days and it was a very small paperback.which was recommended reading. Today it is a much larger and used as a complete textbook. Thanks for the update and new publication. It is a very worthy book which is atestiment to John Hope Franklin.

"We were there, too"
By George A. Carlson
You've got to read this book to understand that it isn't just "A History of African Americans," it's a history of the people of this country.

I got it (the book) after learning of the 2009 death of the main author, John Hope Franklin, born in 1915. He was a very educated man, a professor at many colleges, and he was an African American, who wrote a lot.

"From Slavery to Freedom" was first published in 1947 ... when "Freedom" was still to be won - and he wrote about that battle for Freedom in eight subsequent editions. In the latest of those editions, he had a co-author, also African American and a professor, Alfred A. Moss, Jr.

We would hope that, in spite of Franklin's death, Prof. Moss will continue that journey. Because the journey continues .... in all of us.

Franklin said of the book, "My challenge was to weave into the fabric of American history enough of the presence of blacks so that the story of the United States could be told adequately and fairly." (The quote is from Wikepedia).

Of course, he could have said, "Throughout the history of America, we were there, too.

Read the book and learn about us. African Americans and Americans.

Better But Not Well: Mental Health Policy in the United States since 1950, by Richard G. Frank, Sherry A. Glied

The past half-century has been marked by major changes in the treatment of mental illness: important advances in understanding mental illnesses, increases in spending on mental health care and support of people with mental illnesses, and the availability of new medications that are easier for the patient to tolerate. Although these changes have made things better for those who have mental illness, they are not quite enough.

In Better But Not Well, Richard G. Frank and Sherry A. Glied examine the well-being of people with mental illness in the United States over the past fifty years, addressing issues such as economics, treatment, standards of living, rights, and stigma. Marshaling a range of new empirical evidence, they first argue that people with mental illness―severe and persistent disorders as well as less serious mental health conditions―are faring better today than in the past. Improvements have come about for unheralded and unexpected reasons. Rather than being a result of more effective mental health treatments, progress has come from the growth of private health insurance and of mainstream social programs―such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, housing vouchers, and food stamps―and the development of new treatments that are easier for patients to tolerate and for physicians to manage.

The authors remind us that, despite the progress that has been made, this disadvantaged group remains worse off than most others in society. The "mainstreaming" of persons with mental illness has left a policy void, where governmental institutions responsible for meeting the needs of mental health patients lack resources and programmatic authority. To fill this void, Frank and Glied suggest that institutional resources be applied systematically and routinely to examine and address how federal and state programs affect the well-being of people with mental illness.

Review

Offers many insights beneficial to the informed reader.

(David Mechanic New England Journal of Medicine)

The authors are true to their word in providing an excellent overview of changes in the last 50 years. They provide compelling evidence that the condition of many, if not most, persons with mental illness has improved during that period.

(JAMA)

By pulling information from a wide variety of sources, these authors provide a fresh and optimistic look on improvements in the well-being of people with mental illness. A major contribution to the field.

(Steven Sharfstein, President and CEO of the Sheppard Pratt Health System)

An important and provocative addition to the literature dealing with health policy.

(Gerald N. Grob, Ph.D., Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research, Rutgers University, author of The Deadly Truth)

Professors Frank and Glied offer a broad-based and candid assessment of the evolution of mental health care in the United States and of how the well-being of people touched by mental health problems changed during the last half of the twentieth century.

(Rosalynn Carter, from the Foreword)

Will be of greatest interest to students of mental health economics, services, and policy, but clinicians interested in the relationship between health policy and everyday practice will also find it useful.

(Burton V. Reifler International Psychogeriatrics)

Provides a necessary counterpart to much overenthusiastic optimism surrounding recent development in psychopharmacology and the neurosciences.

(Bonnie Evans Journal of Mental Health)

Offers a fascinating... historical analysis of mental health policy.

(Ellen Dwyer History of Psychiatry)

Should be assigned to every practitioner, mental health clinician, administrator, and advocate ― as well as every legislator and policy maker―concerned with the status of Americans with serious mental illness.

(William Fisher Psychiatric Services)

If one... has time to read one book on mental health policy this year, this should be the one.

(Roger Meyer Health Affairs)

A comprehensive assessment of changes in the life conditions and well-being of persons with serious mental illnesses over the past five decades.

(Janet R. Nelson Clergy Journal)

A well-written and important work that provides a definitive look at the past and a glimpse into the future of mental health policy in America.

(Kathleen Brown RN, MSN, PhD Nursing History Review)

A cut and dry policy book
By Mathew Knudson
It's a relatively unbiased view of the evolution of mental health policy in the US, and it covers most of the key points, from availability and structure of care to the costs and financing, as well as quality of care. There's also some minor discussion of rights and social stigma based on survey data. However, it buys into the mainstream narrative of psychiatry, which is very positive toward the field, which is challenge by a lot of new research, as well as books such as "American Psychosis". This book is a great start, but you should probably couple it with a few other readings if you really want a comprehensive understanding of what's happened.

Mental Health Policy Book
By Professor
Provides a good historical overview of the mental health system. Details the rise and fall of various therapies and gaps
in the system.

Purchase this book with the recognition that its value is in its historical / policy approach of the subject. Some of the
commentary on pharmacology is dated - example, tricyclics being noted as first line therapy for depression.

Excellent overview
By Kevin
I found the coverage of factors that have impacted mental health care in the US very comprehensive and authoritative. The authors are clearly thoughtful about the complexities, including the philosophical and sociological perspectives at play, and extremely knowledgeable about the pragmatic details of policy development and implementation. An excellent work!

An Intelligent Comedy - so Refreshing
By Metella
Suspenseful and funny - Plus set in the future with lasers, all types of alien species ...

The pace was fast, interesting and this book had multiple lines to the story - which I liked.

It really was unlike anything I've read over the last 20 years - a real mix of all the good stuff - If you like mystery books you will like this. If you like sci fi you will like this. And I loved that the vocab wasn't dumbed down. Very pleased with this book and it was a FULL STORY - start to finish - but left enough character endings open to have a nice series start from this if the author is so moved. Looking forward to it.

Diverting if not especially memorable.
By Victor R. Casados
This story is a sort of Holmes/Murder On the Orient Express pastiche and does a passable job of it.
Set on a luxury space-liner populated by the usual mix of humans and (in some cases highly improbable) aliens.

It is a murder mystery with a sub-plot or two and a bit of a twist at the end.
I spent a couple of hours being entertained by this story, although I was not inclined to seek out more by this author.

Not a bad tale, but not a fine one either.
Still, it is worth a read - if only once.

Not great literature, but a fun story in a sci-fi sherlock Holmes sort of way.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5 To those who have read Jackie Robinson: Pro-Baseball's First Black Star (Creative Education, 1974; o.p.) by James T. Olsen or any of the dozen other biographies of this sports figure, a familiar story is recounted here. Testimonials from family and friends, based on those in his autobiography I Never Had it Made (Putnam, 1972; o.p.), reveal that from early childhood Robinson was a giving person who was more concerned about the welfare of his friends and family than his own success. Tales of such heroes can stand retelling. Like most of its predecessors, this version is worthy of its subject. Ann G. Brouse, Steele Memorial Library, Elmira, N.Y.

The Story of Jackie Robinson: Bravest Man in Baseball is about the struggles of one black man who made a big difference. Jackie Robinson was a great athlete in college but was not let into the Major Leagues because his skin was black. Robinson played on the Brooklyn Dodgers in the "Noble Experiment" which was meant Jackie being the first black on a white team. His team looked down on him because of the color of his skin. When the fans yelled slurs at him and other teams yelled at him it overwhelmed the Dodgers. They finally stood up for Robinson. I recommend this wonderful book, Jackie Robinson: Bravest Man in Baseball because it has a lot of action and emotion.

The Story of Jackie Robinson: Bravest Man in Baseball is about the struggles of one black man who never gave up. Jackie Robinson was a great athlete in college and wanted to go to the Major's but they wouldn't let him because he was black. The general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey took a chance on Jackie. Rickey said would let him play if he didn't fight back over racial slurs and attacks. This was known as the "Noble Experiment". Jackie's team looked down on him and fans harassed him because of the color of his skin. At last everybody realized Robinson was a great guy and that the color of a person's skin doesn't mater. In the end Jackie Robinson won the admiration of all American people. I think that you should read this book because it shows someone with great courage.

Process Control for Practitioners, by Jacques F. Smuts

To be effective in optimizing the performance of industrial process control systems, an engineer or technician has to understand process dynamics, controllers, and tuning; use the right techniques and tools; and know how to troubleshoot control problems. This book conveys the knowledge and techniques required to effectively tune controllers and optimize the performance of automatic control systems. It clearly and concisely covers all the topics and know-how required for being an outstanding controls practitioner. Explanations go into enough depth to make the material understandable, but discussions are kept to the point so the book can serve as a reference guide. The book shows you how to tune PID controllers more effectively in less time, and ensure long-term loop stability. It is your complete reference for improving control-loop performance, solving process control problems, and designing control strategies. You will refer to this guide again and again.

Exceptional Book for Process Control
By Blair Johnston
This book is a must have for anyone required to do process control as part of their role at an operational plant. It provides enough information to make it useful and easily understandable, but not so much technical information that it becomes redundant or boring.
It provides well thought out examples and pictures to demonstrate efficiently. This book also gives tips on how to properly step test a process as well as troubleshoot any problems that could affect control.
Anyone that is looking for a good book to futher develop their skills as a Process control Practioner should pick up a copy.

Great practical 'toolbox' book
By David Wood
You must remember what it was like at university? All those differential equations, then you found out about Laplace transforms (how much easier was that!), feedback control theory etc etc.

Then you graduated and landed on a factory floor somewhere and all of a sudden there wasn't a pole or a zero to be seen. And then you were asked to tune that control loop...

Fortunately there was that senior engineer who had already been there for a decade and knew *how* to do all of that practical stuff, and even better they could explain it so that you could *understand* what you were doing.

This book is like that senior engineer. Full of the 'good stuff' explained in a respectful conversational way to help you understand what you are reading. I find that many books raise the, "but what if such and such happens..." type of questions in my mind and then don't offer any solutions. With this book I found that either those questions actually got answered directly, or at least it gave me enough information so that I could make some reasonable assumptions so I wouldn't be too far off the mark.

Highly recommended.

Worth every penny if you want a nice practical reminder on how to get your loops working
By mr reader
I do real time control and this book is geared more for large industrial plants, but the principles involved are exactly the same. If you haven't had to do control for years you might end up being rusty on exactly how to apply state space, z, or laplace. This book manages to explain practical control theory without resorting to the higher maths mentioned. It provides a set of simple rules of thumb for setting up and tuning control systems, do's and donts, and examples of real world cascaded control systems that tend to fight each other. Worth every penny if you want a nice practical reminder on how to get your loops working. It covers pressure/flow/ temperature and storage tank type control systems, and points out that there are actually 3 completely different types of PID controller, which is something I have not seen in any other literature.
