Finest drawing book I own.

I bought this book a few years ago from Mr. Sibley's website, and got an autographed copy. I read it straight through and was impressed, but then was really into digital art so I forgot about it. Recently, I've gotten back to basics and am using good ol' pencil, paper, and eraser, so I read the book again.

I have to say, this is hands-down, the best over-all drawing book I have ever read. I have at least ten different books from general drawing to things like portrait drawing, drawing animals, etc. He gives a detailed discussion on various materials, from different paper types and pencils to less well-known or talked about things like colour shapers and Blue Tack. He talks about the strengths and weaknesses of all the materials.

His explanation and instruction on shading, layering, and blending is the most comprehensive I've ever heard. He leaves no stone unturned, talking about various shading techniques (hatching, blending, etc) and some of the mistakes people make when learning or performing the techniques. Here he goes into great detail on using the Blue Tack (a specific brand of wall-putty used to attach posters to walls, etc) to achieve incredibly gradual gradations of tone.

He has several full demonstrations in the book: one of a baby girl, a cat, and a dog. He discusses every step of the process and there are pictures accompanying each step. The realism he is able to achieve is nothing short of astonishing.

I have very few complaints about the book. I wish the section on trees and other background elements had been a little more extensive, but this wasn't specifically a book about landscapes, etc. so I can't count it down for that. There were a couple other little things, but again, nothing major. If you can still buy this off of his website, or find a copy that isn't extremely expensive (like it currently is here on amazon) then buy it immediately, unless you are an advanced artist. You won't be disappointed.

Love this Book

I own this book and have to say that it is one my most prized art books. It is strictly a graphite drawing book. I have learned so many new techniques and plan to read it again and again. Mike Sibley is an amazing artist! I draw mostly people, not dogs, but his techniques transfer to any subject matter in graphite. I definitely recommend this book. Even though it is kind of pricey, I was worth it to me. Go to Mike Sibley's website and read his tutorials. That will tell you if his methods are right for you. The book includes these tutorials and more.

About the Author

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Director of The Justice Research Association, a private consulting firm and "think tank" focusing on issues of law, crime, and justice. The Justice Research Association, which is based in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, serves the needs of the nation's civil and criminal justice planners, administrators, and educators through workshops, conferences, and grant-writing and program evaluation support. Its most significant project to date is the Criminal Justice Distance Learning Consortium (CJDLC). CJDLC can be found on the Web at http://www.cjcentral.com/cjdlc.

Dr. Schmalleger holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, having earned both a master's (1970) and doctorate (1974) from Ohio State University with a special emphasis in criminology. From 1976 to 1994, he taught criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. For the last sixteen of those years, he chaired the university's Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. My purpose in writing this textbook has been to provide students with an appreciation for the fundamental nature of law, an overview of general legal principles, and a special understanding of the historical development of criminal law and its contemporary form and function in today's American society. Stories from real life, the critical placement of photographs illustrating cogent contemporary issues, and the use of end-of-chapter Capstone Cases are all meant to bring the law to life.

My approach has been strongly influenced by my belief that the law has always been, and remains, a vital policy-making tool. As a topic for study and discussion, the nature and life of the law is more important today than ever before. The challenges that face the law as it continues to adapt to the needs of a complex and rapidly changing society are highlighted in this text and serve to emphasize for readers the contemporary relevance of our ever-evolving American criminal law.

A central feature of this textbook can be found in its Capstone Cases, placed at the end of each chapter, which provide actual court opinions illustrating important themes in the law. Capstone Cases afford significant insights into the everyday workings of American jurisprudence, and they illustrate the logic by which appellate decisions are made. Law on the Books and Criminal Law in the News boxes, placed throughout the text, illustrate the multiplicity of legal perspectives found at federal, state, and local levels and make students aware of jurisdictional differences in the law. The Unmaking of a Documentary

Very interesting treatment of not only the Steven Avery murder trial, but of the machinations employed by documentary makers to shape the perceptions of a nation of Netflix users. The omissions and juxtapositions skillfully used by those involved with "Making of a Murderer" are held in stark contrast to the actual transcripts and reports considered by Avery's murder trial jury in determine his guilt.

Everyone who watched "The Making of a Murderer" should read this book. Period. Griesbach uses the trial transcripts, word for word, to demonstrate several places where footage was edited by the filmmakers in a deceptive, misleading way. I still believe that it was correct to throw out Brendan Dassey's conviction because of his attorney's disgraceful conduct towards his client, but this book builds the case step by step, beyond any reasonable doubt, of Steven Avery's guilt in Teresa Holbach's murder. There is so much missing or misrepresented in the documentary that those who watched it and believe Avery was wrongfully convicted a second time need to read this book. It's a game-changer.

Well written with some well substantiated theories opposing MaM

Like many others I binged Making a Murderer, and following that I read Griesbach's The Innocent Killer. I thought it was a very interesting read, but the part about Halbach's murder felt shallow. In that book Griesback believed in Avery's guilt, but didn't convince me of it. When Griesbach announced he was writing a new book, and still believed in Avery's guilt, instead of his innocence, "even" after MaM, it caught my interest. I wondered what he would come up with? Because imo Kratz hasn't ever been convincing in any of his interviews following MaM.

I have the say it took a while before this book really caught my interest, whereas its predecessor was interesting from start to end. This book didn't hook me up until chapter 7 or 8. This doesn't mean the others were boring, but they just don't contain as much information that was left out of MaM.

In the early chapters Griesbach again failed to convince me of Avery's guilt. Completely. I believe he also made some mistakes. For example he often refers to Avery burning a cat, and then goes on to say animal cruelty can be a sign of a future killer. However, the official police report of this incident says it wasn't Avery who burned the cat. Griesbach also spents some time about Stachowski being abused by Avery. However, he omitted the fact that when Stachowski was interviewed by the police about this, she reeked of alcohol and there were no red marks on her neck or anywhere else.

However later in the book, he does become more convincing. The *67 and the luring of Halbach theory that Kratz has been telling in the media very poorly, has been explained in this book more detailed and more convincing. He also makes the "Magic Bullet" a little less magic and overall does well in opposing MaM.

Am I convinced of Avery's guilt now because of this book? Actually, I just don't know. Avery's current lawyer is so convinced of his innocence. Buting and Strang still are. And they know Avery better than Griesbach does. Some theories in MaM have taken a hit though, but some are still standing strong.

If you don't mind reading about a different view on the Avery case, this is a must buy.

Great book. For RIA or tax advisor. Very advanced strategies. Had an intelligent client read it and I'm afraid it scared him. Though Luby is selling his services a bit, with the complexity of the subject his services would be a welcome help. Besides with his listing of the various resources he uses no one can claim he's making them a captive client

Worth a spot on your bookshelf

Simply outstanding. Paul De Grauwe writes about issues pertaining to exchange rates regimes with great clarity. Chapter 9 about near-rational behavior is particularly interesting, even if the part on chaos theory is too terse. For those more particularly interested in the economics of monetary unions, I also strongly recommend his book "The economics of monetary integration".
