Grade 6 Up-Organized with a keen eye toward currently hot topics, this revised and expanded version of the 1995 edition will be a popular choice for readers whose informational needs surpass what either general or specialized encyclopedias have to offer. Each volume takes on a swath of related topics, from Stars and Atoms to Computing, and Chemistry in Action to Ecology and Environment. Each book opens and closes with extensive quick-reference sections, sandwiching approximately 50 single-spread articles on somewhat broader subjects. The copious illustrations, a mix of sharply reproduced photos and digital art, expertly illuminate principles discussed in the text and present the occasional arresting image: a large cutaway of a steam locomotive, for instance, or a gorgeous shot of the vertical limestone peaks in China's Guilin Province. Cross references are confined to the glossaries, but each volume has an individual index, cumulated in a separate volume (a new feature of this edition) that also contains annotated lists of scientific organizations and recommended Web sites, among other features. Readers after biographical information, however, or science projects, will have to look elsewhere. This set doesn't match the Raintree Steck-Vaughn Illustrated Science Encyclopedia (Raintree, 1996) for breadth, but it does cover its chosen areas in greater depth, and frequently with more up-to-date information. Consider the New Encyclopedia as a replacement for the first edition, or as a significant collection strengthener for midsize or larger libraries supporting strong science programs.

This set is an update to the original New Encyclopedia of Science, which was published in 1995. It consists of nine volumes, eight of them devoted to a particular field of modern science: "Matter and Energy," "Animals and Plants," "Chemistry in Action," "Stars and Atoms," "Earth and Other Planets," "Ecology and Environment," "Computing," and "Evolution and Genetics." The set is intended for both general readers with quick questions and students interested in specific scientific topics. The majority of each volume, about 100 pages, is a narrative consisting of approximately 50 topical sections (for example, "Hydrocarbon Chains," "Patterns of Animal Growth," "The Human Genome Project"), each two to four pages in length. Highlighted terms refer the reader to the other major component of the volume, "Keywords," an alphabetic mini-encyclopedia containing more than 400 brief entries. This "Keywords" section cross-references back to the thematic topics. The cross-referencing is only within each volume.
Each volume begins with a "Knowledge Map" that shows how the pertinent areas of science are interrelated as well as defining the major fields. Next, there is an extensive "Time Chart" that traces the development of the science through the key discoveries that shaped it. Each volume concludes with its own "Factfile" offering a wealth of quick information for the casual browser, including data, tables, and statistics chosen for their relevance to the subject. In addition, each volume has its own index and subject-specific recommended further reading list. New to this edition is the ninth volume, which has a full set index and a more general reading list. It also contains a listing of scientific institutions worldwide, recommended Web sites, and places to visit. Other changes include the addition of plant life to the volume on animal life, advances in computer technology, and updates to the "Keywords" and time lines.
The text is written for the less well informed reader and should be accessible to most. The layout is bright and appealing. Color photographs and illustrations appear on almost every page. All of the illustrations include thorough annotations that nicely supplement the text.
Each of these new volumes is excellent as a stand-alone. The addition of a cumulative index enhances their value as a reference set that would be a useful addition to the science collection in public and high-school libraries. RBB
