Horribly confusing at times. Seek a different textbook, if possible.

I am a recent geology B.S. graduate and I absolutely loved my major. That being said, this book was a requirement for one of my classes and I have no qualms stating how much of a headache the problems in this book were. Not because they were hard problems, but because the book does a very poor job at providing quality examples. Some of the diagrams are also mislabeled (e.g. three point problems) which literally will leave a student at a roadblock -- forcing you to find another source to teach you how to solve certain problems.

Furthermore, the appendices in the book lack randomized (or even/odd numbered) problem solutions such as can be found in most modern math, engineering, chemistry textbooks.

Bottom Line: This textbook makes learning structural geology a huge turn off.

It's a well written textbook, but I realized after receiving a rental version that it was mistake to rent this book. The previous user had torn out exercise pages that I needed to complete my assignments. So luckily I was able to return it.

One of my five favorite books

I've read the paper version of this book so many times the pages are falling out. Only three other books, A Canticle for Liebowitz, The Great Gatsby, and my copy of the complete Holmes cannon, have suffered similar fates through similar actions. Dibdin stays true to Doyle's characters, and does a fine job of weaving real people into the tale. I won't spoil the ending, but be prepared for a shock. I'm thrilled to have an easily-carried copy of this book that won't lose pages.

Not only did I NOT like this book, I DESPISED it, and still do.

With all due respect to the author, who has performed great feats with other work, I not only HATED with RUE BLOOD what he did to Holmes in this book, I knew what he was going to do within the first five or six pages. Let me explain, my fellow Watsons...

See, I was about to embark on a trip to the UK. I spotted this beautifully rendered cover, depicting Whitechapel in the 1880's, which evoked images of Holmes, the Ripper, and the fascinating and troubling times in which Londoners lived. I thought, "Hmm. Holmes versus the Ripper. Sounds great! I've seen it done here and there, but, this one looks neat!"

I bought said book. I began reading it on my flight to London. Before the plane took off, I put it down.

Why? Well for starters, the author telegraphs EVERYTHING by making three mistakes. He quotes Doyle, or at least offers a quote attributed to ACD when a playwright asked him if he could "marry Holmes" to a woman for the sake of a play he was writing. Doyle's response, and I am paraphrasing what was quoted because I THREW THIS BOOK AWAY, was something akin to, "Marry him, kill him, do whatever you like." In other words, ACD was not averse to doing some wild things to Holmes as long as it told a good Holmes story. But the presence of that quote indicated something to me. I got a gut sense that the author wanted to get "pseudo-creative-post-modernist-gimmicky" on me. The next few pages (describing how a box had been held at a bank for Watson for 75 years after his death, and that he'd asked that it not be opened until those years had passed because the final manuscript in it was so devastating) -- well those told me almost everything I needed to know.

Have ya guessed yet? Yeah, doesn't take much, does it?

Then, I noticed that the author was playing fast and loose with Holmes' supposed drug use, something which is barely mentioned in the canon of real stories, and which Watson got Holmes to stop when they realized it was too dangerous. I HATE it when people try to mix Holmes' character with their own modern takes on what is a super-genius or a 'troubled mind'. Don't waste my time. Just create your own character and leave the Holmes character alone. In this case, Dibdin tries to convince us that Holmes was so bored and into drugs that Watson worried over his mental state. (BINGBINGBINGBING! Ya hear the alarm bells ringing?)

Sooo, as you might have already figured out, those three things told me everything I needed to know about what the author was going to do, and it made me very angry. Doyle said to other authors that they could do what they wanted to do to Holmes, but it was HOLMES, not a garbled-homicidal version of Holmes, not a person who is, in fact, so far from being Holmes that it's an insult to give him that name. I knew within those first few pages that Mr. Dibdin was going to make Holmes the Ripper - snooze. Is one supposed to think this is inspired plotting? Something so crude and obvious is distasteful and trite. Stupid to the extreme. Insulting. I decided to confirm my suspicions by flipping to the back of the book, and lo-and-behold, I was correct. Five or six pages, and you can predict the ending. Wonderful.

So not only is this insulting to the character and work of Doyle, it is boring and as predictable as a baby soiling its diaper.

I did with it what most people do with diapers. I tossed it in the trash. No way was I going to let someone else pick up this dung and spread it around.

Do not read this book...

... it will destroy your love of Holmes and should not have been written. Although it is somewhat familiar with the established Holmes continuity; it perverts and distorts the character into a vile, inhuman monster. A violation of all things good.

As another reviewer said, avoid like the plague.

VIgnettes of Human Vulnerabilty and Dignity

This is an unusual book--definitely not a novel, for the plot is non-existant. The storyline alternates among 4 teenagers and 3 veterans of different wars--none of whom meet each other. According to the Summary, there is a theme which provides commonality/literary glue (see Heading) but even that is somewhat obscure. The chapters are short and read quickly. Master story-teller Paulsen held my interest because I kept waiting for the four protagonists to interact and solve the world's problems--or at least their own.
But it was not to be, which lead to my frustration and disappointment. If he just wanted to write good short stories, he could have rearranged them, so that readers would realize when the end had been reached about a specific young adult. Nor did I notice any thread of nuclear disaster, as proclaimed on the back of the book. I found human vulnerability and dignity, as these young people sought meaning and direction in their lives. All four pursued th! eir goals differently, but it was unfortuate that they never knew of each other's dilemmas, so they could learn from each other's experience. A sad commentary on the social isolation of the teen years. Knowing the heights to expect from Paulsen, I felt cheated.

Heart of youths and Mother Nature

I am a junior high school teacher in Japan.I found this wonderful book in the school library.Everybody will be amazed by the construction of this book.But the more important thing is the vivid description of the heart of the youth.I love the story of Sue and the story of Lola especially. An Indian girl,Sue,met an Indian boy.And she woke up her self-knowledgement as an Indian.It was described through the changing of the way which she viewed her grandfather.I want to listen to him singing stories about animals,the wind,moon and seasons. The story of Lola,an only child in a sheep ranch,is also impressive .I can imagine the smell of the birth of sheep when reading this stoty.The connection between Lola and her parents through the common work of keeping sheep,was certainly described. The stories of three youths in the battle field are realistic because the auther heard them from the real soldiers from that time.I have been trying to tell the students about the misery of the war,so that the stories of young soldiers are impressive. I read Gary Paulsen's other book"TRACKERS".In this book the boy's changing heart about death was also described vividly. Peter Paulsen said that he wrote these books for youths but they touched on my heart as well although I am 55 years old.I think Gary Paulsen is a wonderful writer who can describe the heart of youths and Mother Nature vividly.

Sentries is a book about four people with the same dream. Dave,Laura,Sue,and Peter all have the same dream. Though they do not know each other at all. This book has many intresting events that will make you wonder.Also the life stories of these four people and the things they did to get where they are. About the Author
Born in Kasauli in 1934, Ruskin Bond grew up in Jamnagar, Dehradun, New Delhi and Shimla. His first novel, The Room on the Roof, written when he was seventeen, received the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957. Since then he has written over five hundred short stories, essays and novellas (some included in the collections Dust on the Mountains and Classic Ruskin Bond) and more than forty books for children. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for English writing in India in 1993, the Padma Shri in 1999, and the Delhi government s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi s Bal Sahitya Puraskar for his total contribution to children s literature in 2013 and was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2014. He lives in Landour, Mussoorie, with his extended family.

Robert A. Divine

Robert A. Divine, George W. Littlefield Professor Emeritus in American History at the University of Texas at Austin, received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1954. A specialist in American diplomatic history, he taught from 1954 to 1996 at the University of Texas, where he was honored by both the student association and the graduate school for teaching excellence. His extensive published work includes The Illusion of Neutrality (1962); Second Chance: The Triumph of Internationalism in America During World War II (1967); and Blowing on the Wind (1978). His most recent work is Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace (2000), a comparative analysis of twentieth-century American wars. He is also the author of Eisenhower and the Cold War (1981) and editor of three volumes of essays on the presidency of Lyndon Johnson. His book, The Sputnik Challenge (1993), won the Eugene E. Emme Astronautical Literature Award for 1993. He has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and has given the Albert Shaw Lectures in Diplomatic History at Johns Hopkins University.

T. H. Breen

T. H. Breen, William Smith Mason Professor of American History at North� western Uni� versity, received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1968. He has taught at Northwestern since 1970. Breen’s major books include The Character of the Good Ruler: A Study of Puritan Political Ideas in New England (1974); Puritans and Adventurers: Change and Persistence in Early America (1980); Tobacco Culture: The Mentality of the Great Tidewater Planters on the Eve of Revolution (1985); and, with Stephen Innes of the University of Virginia, “Myne Owne Ground”: Race and Freedom on Virginia’s Eastern Shore (1980). His Imagining the Past (1989) won the 1990 Historic Preservation Book Award. His most recent book is Marketplace of Revolution: How Consumer Politics Shaped American Independence (2004). In addition to receiving several awards for outstanding teaching at Northwestern, Breen has been the recipient of research grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), the National Humanities Center, and the Huntington Library. He has served as the Fowler Hamilton Fellow at Christ Church, Oxford University (1987–1988), the Pitt Professor of American History and Institutions, Cambridge University (1990–1991), the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University (2000–2001), and was a recipient of the Humboldt Prize (Germany). He is currently completing a book tentatively entitled America ’s Insurgency: The People’s Revolution, 1774–1776.

George M. Fredrickson

George M. Fredrickson is Edgar E. Robinson Professor Emeritus of United States History at Stanford Uni� versity. He is the author or editor of several books, including The Inner Civil War (1965), The Black Image in the White Mind (1971), and White Supremacy: A Comparative Study in American and South African History (1981), which won both the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award from Phi Beta Kappa and the Merle Curti Award from the Organization of American Historians. His most recent books are Black Liberation: A Comparative History of Black Ideologies in the United States and South Africa (1995); The Comparative Imagination: Racism, Nationalism, and Social Movements (1997); and Racism: A Short History (2002). He received his A.B. and Ph.D. from Harvard and has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Humanities Senior Fellowships, and a fellowship from the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences. Before coming to Stanford in 1984, he taught at Northwestern. He has also served as Fulbright lecturer in American History at Moscow University and as the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford. He served as president of the Organization of American Historians in 1997–1998.

R. Hal Williams

R. Hal Williams is professor of history at Southern Methodist University. He received his A.B. from Prince� ton Uni� versity in 1963 and his Ph.D. from Yale Uni� versity in 1968. His books include The Democratic Party and California Politics, 1880–1896 (1973); Years of Decision: American Politics in the 1890s (1978); and The Manhattan Project: A Documentary Introduction to the Atomic Age (1990). A specialist in American political history, he taught at Yale University from 1968 to 1975 and came to SMU in 1975 as chair of the Department of History. From 1980 to 1988, he served as dean of Dedman College, the school of humanities and sciences, at SMU, where he is currently dean of Research and Graduate Studies. In 1980, he was a visiting professor at University College, Oxford University. Williams has received grants from the American Philosophical Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and he has served on the Texas Committee for the Humanities. He is currently working on a study of the presidential election of 1896 and a biography of James G. Blaine, the late-nineteenth-century speaker of the House, secretary of state, and Republican presidential candidate.

Ariela J. Gross is Professor of Law and History at the University of Southern Cali� fornia. She received her B.A. from Harvard University, her J.D. from Stanford Law School, and her Ph.D. from Stanford University. She is the author of Double Character: Slavery and Mastery in the Antebellum Southern Courtroom (2000) and � numerous law review articles and book chapters, including “‘Caucasian Cloak’: Mexican Americans and the Politics of Whiteness in the Twentieth-Century Southwest” in the Georgetown Law Journal (2006). Her current work in progress, What Blood Won’t Tell: Racial Identity on Trial in America, to be published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, is supported by fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council for Learned Societies.

Crispian Scully is a Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Oral Health-General Health; and is emeritus Professor at UCL. He is Co-Editor of Oral Diseases, Medicina Oral, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry.

Crispian Scully is Past-President of the International Academy of Oral Oncology, European Association of Oral Medicine, British Society for Oral Medicine and British Society of Disability and Oral Health, he has served as Dean in Bristol and UCL; on the General Dental Council; on the Councils of the Royals colleges in Glasgow and Edinburgh; and on committees of NICE and CRUK, He has written and edited over 45 books, written over 150 book chapters and has over 1000 papers cited on MEDLINE. He has received the CBE, University of Helsinki Medal of Honour, University of Santiago de Compostela Medal, University of Granada Medal, Fellowship of UCL, and honorary degrees from the Universities of Athens, Granada, Helsinki and Pretoria. He has received the UK Dental Award for the Most Outstanding Achievements in Dentistry, the Awards of the Spanish Society for Oral Medicine and the Hellenic Society for Oral Medicine, and the International Award of the Spanish Society for Oral Surgery.

Concise nitty-gritty for dental students

This book has proved to be quite valuable for me going through dental school. It is organized in a way that makes finding info very quick, and also is easy to read through the basics. Obviously, it is not a comprehensive review of any subject, and you SHOULD go to your primary texts. Also no oral path. But, it is a great book to just carry around in your early stages of your career. As a current 4th year, I find that I know most of the information it has, but it was very useful for 1+ years.
