The Vision: The Dramatic True Story of One Man's Search for Enlightenment, by Tom Brown

Tom Brown, Jr., the bestselling author of The Tracker and the acclaimed Field Guide series, simply and eloquently shares the beauty and enlightenment of his own spiritual awakening.

An ancient mystical experience, the Vision Quest was undertaken by Native American Indians as an odyssey of self-knowledge and fulfillment—a spiritual journey into the wilderness and the soul. The peace, insight and sense of well-being they gained on the Vision Quest is a lasting testament to man’s relationship with nature.

Now, America’s most respected outdoorsman reveals the secrets of this dramatic and profoundly moving ritual.

From Library Journal
Brown has written a number of good guides to nature. In this volume, he purports to share his knowledge of the spiritual realm, and on occasion, he provokes thoughtful introspection. But more often he comes across as condescending, filled with pity for those who do not share his deep rapport with nature. Brown's account of the spiritual path includes such things as time travel, superhuman strength, and above all, visions. More skilled hands could have formed this material into a spiritual tale of the search for enlightenment, but here it sounds trite, fantastic, and ultimately, unbelievable. Public libraries may get requests for this book from Brown's many fans, but until then, it is not recommended for purchase. Randy Dykhuis, Grand Rapids P.L., Mich.

Very nice diary of a deep Vision. Worth reading, more than once.
By David
I like this book. Other people say what they say. I like reviews that mention similar books, at least books on the same path, so I do that.
Getting out of the box of White Man culture is not so easy, for those who live in their heads. One needs to spend time in Wilderness, or solitude, alone, to let the spirit bubble up into consciousness, no book can substitute for that. I took courses many years ago with the author, which I enjoyed. Other books help with this subject-Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna, Volume 1, Redneck Shaman, Secrets of Shamanism: Tapping the Spirit Power Within You, The Future Is Yours: Do Something About It! and ThetaHealing. There is a Sufi story about moths, and the only moth that really understands the candle is the one who gives himself totally to the light, and the light gives itself to him. This applies to shamanic work. Shamanic techniques work from the larger self, especially in service to others. Shamanism means working with the subconscious, and at times superconscious minds. It cannot be apprehended by the conscious mind, the ego. Without a strong intent of service to others, many things just don't work, or work only slightly. Redneck Shaman would help you understand what Brown is saying there. That and the following book give you some idea of how very different natives storytelling is, how stories shape the Universe, House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic, & Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony With Earth Mother, Book 1 (Bk.1) These are very good basic books, to getting out of the box of White Man culture. Wong Kiew Kit's books on Chi Kung show how ideas like this survive in Chinese culture. Western culture is lost in the literal, and won't look at the deeper meanings of its stories. Neville Goddard has ideas on this, as one example among many. So does Max Freedom Long Secret Science Behind Miracles and Serge King, in Urban Shaman. This book is not a how to, it is a story of one man's experiences, which I found riveting, I couldn't stop reading it. Some people like Brown, some don't. This story is a good one, and it helps one get out of the head, and into the heart. VisionQuests are life changing, and they are very difficult to put in words. Brown succeeded in doing so remarkably well.

"The Vision" a life changer
By Richard F. Smith
I recieved a copy of "The Vision" shortly after I turned 50. It changed my life. While I read it I felt truely at home for the first time in my life. I gave copies to everyone I knew. I've been going to Tom Brown Jr Tracker School for 20 year now. Can I recomend it, yes. I've read all of Tom's books. The books are writen on many level and you can something new each time you read them. You can be reading a story and right in the middle of it will be one sentence with the meaning and purpose of life and the story continues. "The Vision" and "the Quest" are excellent for anyone looking for spiritual insights and good stories.

Extremely Moving
By Dr. Peter Brown
I had read Tracker several years ago and was very impressed then. But in this book, it is the first time I have run across a Native American (and I have read numerous Native American shaman/medicine men/healers) who consciously attempted to transcend his (while deep & profound) cultural spiritual beliefs in search an "ultimate or unified" meaning for all people. The intensity and constancy of his pursuit of this spiritual ultimate to the point of death (several times) was as worthy as any Eastern yogi when the Tibetans talk about "like your hair was on fire", that to achieve this is far more that a couple of sweatlodges or Vision Quests. And while the "non-dualist" will argue "there is nothing to achieve, nothing to do, nowhere to go", its's always the paradox that you seldom realize this until you've done all this "doing". It certainly gave me a strong & rededicated boost to why trying to achieve or realize the same is truly the important goal in my life.
