This book is one of those that sticks with you always, the way the author described the settings made it feel like you are the one inside the book ! The teasing, yearning, blissful plot was incredibly done well!! Who doesn't love a military bad boy? Except when they are going to be related to you..and soon? Was it wrong place wrong time ? Or maybe the right place right time ? Especially now that Logan has Quinn on his radar and he's not finished with this steamy one night stand!! This features an awesome heroine and a Sexy military man what can get better? This book can be read as a stand alone and has a hea. I got this book Free in return of an honest review. This is the second book in a Soldiers of Fortune romance. This book is the story of Logan and Quinn. Logan is a friend of Hudson and Quinn is the older sister of Reagan, both of these characters from the first book Heat. Logan and Quinn engaged in a one night stand, only finding out who each other are at the wedding between Hudson and Raegan. Logan is still attracted to Quinn but, due to promises he made, feels that he can't pursue her. This doesn't stop Logan from engaging Quinn in sexy banter and just trying to piss her off or make her jealous. You don't need to read the first book in order to enjoy the second however, there are some intertwining plots that occur within the story. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Aubrey Irons is amazing!!

When I read the first book in this series, I knew that I had found a great new series to since my teeth into. I definitely wasn't disappointed with Burn. I was so happy to see that Logan got his own story. The chemistry between Logan and Quinn was amazing, and I felt like I actually knew these characters. I honestly felt sad when the book was over because I felt like these characters were my friends and we were saying goodbye. I thought that Reagan and Hudson's story was amazing, but somehow this was better than the first. Logan is definitely my new book boyfriend. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Not really a new edition

"A completely revised and updated guide..."

This review is not really about the content. I think the content is great. I believe in the coconut oil miracle. Yet, when comparing the 5th edition (2013) to the 4th edition (2004) I see basically no changes. I bought the 5th hoping there would be new research, new proof, new conclusions. I was disappointed.
I found no new forward or introduction. One website added to the Resources section. The Product section was dropped. In References (chapter bibliographies) I found only a few new entries in one chapter (Coconut Oil as Food and as Medicine) which did not seem significant. The book contained the same 50 recipes. The 5th edition has more pages (more readable with more white space) and a nice new cover.

In general I suggest the 4th edition is a better buy.
Strangely both editions are available from the same publisher at this time.

Message is good, but the delivery is an annoying mess

Let me start by saying that I am a firm believer in coconut products, and we use coconut oil, and have been using it for a while, for most of our cooking. We also use it as moisturizer, deodorant, shaving cream, hair and scalp treatment, etc.

BUT, had I read this book without any knowledge of the properties of coconut, I would have been pretty disappointed and it would have probably made me think twice about actually using it. Why? Because while the message might seem good, the delivery is a mess, with unconvincing claims and examples, served in a very annoying style, which might in fact detract from the overall message of the book.

I have been surrounded by books all my life. My parents encouraged reading, and my mother worked for a mail-order bookstore, so I started loving books early. I also read my share of books when conducting research during my graduate studies. And reading is a daily routine. This book? Oh boy… It actually prompted me to write my first book review on Amazon!

First of all, the book is extremely repetitive. And when I say repetitive I mean it! Almost every sentence is restated at least 5 times, maybe more... As such, this entire could have been only 40 pages or so. It is so repetitive in fact, that it becomes annoying, too annoying. I understand that he is trying to make a point, but there is absolutely no need to duplicate sentences on the same page… I almost gave up on reading it after the first chapter…

More, the author provides some references at the end of the book, but almost none are cited in the text. So if you need to see whether or not his statements are supported by research, you’d need to try and link them to the references listed at the end. But unless you actually do the entire lit review yourself, and search and read the abstracts for all his references, this will prove almost impossible…

Also, some of the examples given in the book are a bit far-fetched. The author mentioned at one point that using coconut is a gradual healing process. But most of his examples suggest otherwise. In one of them he described how coconut oil healed dementia in a very short period of time, with drastic effects sees after mere hours of ingestion!

Furthermore, the author goes onto mentioning that all that matters in a weight loss diet is calorie counting. Well, recent research and published literature disagrees, and suggests that not all calories are created equal or processed by your body in the same way. Try eating all your calories from processed carbs then, no? He does talk about the ketogenic diet (not necessarily a low calorie diet but proven by studies to promote weight loss), but only in relationship to its beneficial effects in epilepsy treatment and other neurodegenerative disorders - he suggests it is unsustainable and unhealthy. But what is very strange about this topic is that he makes the argument that such a diet is achievable only through fasting or only through using MCT oils! MCTs are indeed faster at stimulating a ketogenic state and coconut oil has been used since the 20's to induce ketosis in epilepsy treatments, but really, only MCTs?

The author suggests various ways of incorporating coconut oil in one's diet. One method proposed is adding coconut oil to beverages. OK, that sounds good. But why he suggested adding it to V8 juice is beyond me… Is V8 his idea of a healthy drink?

Not to say that book does not offer some humor as well: the author suggest using coconut oil for scalp treatment, and he provides a personal example of how he got rid of dandruff by using coconut oil (which I believe and have been using it for this purpose with great results). Well, if you turn the book over and see his picture printed on the back, you might think twice about the validity of his claim - he is pretty bald!

But to top it all off, let me just read some of the ingredients from his Coconut Banana Bread recipe: 1/2 cup coconut oil, 1 cup of sugar, 2 cups of flour, etc. 1 cup of sugar?!? 2 cups of flour?!? Is this his idea of healthy? If you promote coconut as the miracle food, why the heck not using coconut sugar? Why not coconut flour? I mean, who cares about glycemic index, or processed ingredients, no? But hey, this is his general idea and the message of this book - you will heal yourself and will become a healthy human being as long as you just replace vegetable oil with coconut oil… that's it... keep eating sugar and flour and all will be OK... I am almost sure this is not the case, but somehow this gives me the feeling that the author is just riding the "coconut wave".

All-in-all this is a disappointing book, with info readily available with a quick search on the internet, with dubious claims and examples, all wrapped in a very, very annoying style. If you are unaware of the benefits of coconut, feel free to buy it and hopefully you will be inspired to use more coconut in your life. But if you are already using coconut and are aware of its many benefits, not much to see here - steer clear as you will learn nothing new, and might get pretty annoyed in the process.

It's True, Coconut Oil IS A Miracle

I became a coconut oil fanatic after reading this book and testing it out and seeing all the benefits of coconut oil. I even bought this book for several family members and they are now big coconut oil fans as well.

The book goes into why coconut oil got a bad rap to begin with. It was a marketing ploy by the GMO soybean companies that wanted to take over the movie popcorn market and it worked. The sad fact is, coconut oil is far healthier for you than many other oils and especially healthier than GMO soybean oil that is now used in movie theatre popcorn. And coconut oil is a much more stable oil that can last a very long time in your pantry.

It is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. I have used it in food and it tastes delicious. I love it on popcorn with sea salt, freshly baked bread, in smoothies, stir frys and I make raw chocolates that are to die for with it.

As far as health benefits, I have used it to prevent colds that I felt coming on, healed dry skin, sunburn, softened dry hair, whitened my teeth via oil pulling with it and my sister even healed an infected sore on her cat's head with it. The cat had a sore that just did seem to want to heal. We thought it was fungal and a couple of days with coconut oil on the sore and it dried right up.

This book goes into so many more benefits than these mentioned including things like constipation (that I can attest to) and weight loss. It is a great thing to have before a workout. Some people even claim it has gotten rid of their hypothyroidism and now studies are coming out that it is slowing Alzheimer's.

If you want to learn about all the amazing benefits and uses for coconut oil, this is the best book for that.

Caveat emptor

I agree that there is a lot of useful information included in here. From personal experience, however, my prospective employer was taken aback by the information that the book recommended I ask for because they were not 'commonplace requests'. Caveat emptor: some of the advice may not be practical based on your specific situation. You really have to feel it out.

Excellent, quick read

Everyone who does not have much experience with practice evaluation and contract review should read this book. I read it on the flight to one of my interviews and it proved to be very helpful when I discussed the practice with the interviewer. It does not go into great depth but it gave me just enough to understand the terminology and ins and outs of how a practice works, as well as types of contracts.

About the Author
Frances M. McNair, Ph.D., CPA: Dr. McNair holds the KPMG Peat Marwick Professorship of Accounting at Mississippi State University, (MSU) and received her Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Mississippi. Her research has been published in the Journal of Accountancy, Management Accounting, and the Business and Professional Ethics Journal.

Philip R. Olds, Ph.D., CPA: Dr. Olds is Professor of Accounting at Virginia Commonwealth University, and received his Ph.D. from Georgia State University.

Thomas P. Edmonds, Ph.D.: Dr. Edmonds is Professor of Accountancy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, (UAB). He has been actively involved in teaching accounting principles throughout his academic career. He has received several prestigious teaching awards, including the UAB President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the distinguished Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for excellence in classroom teaching. His academic experience includes being published in the Journal of Accounting Education, the Accounting Review, and the Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance among others. Dr. Edmonds received his Ph.D. in Accounting from Georgia State University.

Chapter 9 was very good (Financial Statement Analysis)

Not a fan of the book. It will get you through Accounting class, but it was too GD much to cover all 16 chapters in a 5 week summer MBA class at NC State. Chapter 9 was very good (Financial Statement Analysis).

Price fixing at its finest.

We all know know by now that these publishing companies try to take your money. 230 for a book that's exactly the same as a previous edition where the only difference are the practice problems/examples in it. Not to mention that this book is FILLED with errors and incorrect questions and answers. I find at least one per chapter. With a book at this price there should be none. If you have to get this book though, PLEASE go and buy the international version if you can find it. It's exactly the same, word for word. The only difference is that it's softcover and insanely cheaper. I paid 40 for it new. Don't let these publishing companies get the best of you by taking your money and convincing you that you need to spend astronomical amount of money to further your education.

Ripoff!

This was a waste of money. I was under the impression that this book came with the much needed connect code. I just had to pay another $125 with connect and access to the ebook is included. I don't want this anymore and truly I want my money back. It's a rip off!

About the Author

Peggy A. Houglum, PhD, is a retired associate professor at the Rangos School of Health Sciences at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She has more than 40 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer and licensed physical therapist, providing patient and athlete care in a variety of settings, including university athletic training facilities, sports medicine clinics, rehabilitation hospitals, acute care hospitals, burn care, workers’ compensation clinics, and extended care facilities. She has also served as an athletic trainer with the United States Olympic Sports Festivals, Olympic Games, and World University Games.

Houglum’s extensive background as a certified athletic trainer, physical therapist, clinical and classroom educator, and program director provides her with a unique perspective on the appropriate use of therapeutic exercise techniques in rehabilitation programs for treatment of athletic injury.

In 1991, Houglum created the National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s (NATA) first formal continuing education program. Since that time, Houglum has served as chair of the NATA Continuing Education Committee and as a member of the organization’s Education Council and the Council on Employment. In 2002, she was named to the NATA Hall of Fame, the association’s highest honor, and received NATA’s Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 1996. In 2009, Houglum was named Most Influential Rehabilitation Professional in Physical Therapy by Therapy Times.

Houglum is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and its Sports Medicine Section. She is also a member of NATA and served on the NATA’s CEPAT committee and the BOC’s Role Delineation #6 and #7 Committees. Houglum continues to serve as associate editor for Sports Rehabilitation.

Houglum was keynote speaker at the 2011 Hong Kong Society for Surgery of the Hand Conference, where she made two additional presentations. She has contributed to the advancement of sport rehabilitation through several international, national, and regional presentations. Over the years she has coauthored textbooks, written journal articles, and contributed chapters to sports medicine texts.

Houglum enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, painting, biking, and snowshoeing. She resides in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin.

This book was very inquisitive. It makes upcoming teachers very aware of topics and situations they didn't even think of being in. You learn in what ways teaching young children social studies is appropriate.

The first few chapters are pretty basic. The whole book is a mixture of super-obvious, textbook-style ideas mixed in with a some helpful outlines of how children learn social studies. I found the sections on how children learn geography and history particularly helpful, and they had some good activity ideas for these. The book has some good advice, but I wish it had a more critical analysis of power (as in, it could talk more about anti-oppression).

"NEW" purchase from Amazon does not contain all items listed by the Publisher

Hello!

I am using this review to let others know of a product issue that I encountered.

Pearson education says that NEW copies of this book come with an Access Code. To allow buyers access into their online portion of the classes and/or online resources. The "NEW" copy of this book, when purchased directly from Amazon, does not come with this code. When I asked about it, the representative claimed that the code "was not part of the features listed".
While this is true, I want to make sure that others do not buy this new thinking that the code comes with it.

It is, BY FAR, cheaper to buy a used copy, and then purchase a new code directly from Pearson.

The only other option is to buy the new book, and then buy a code as well. no point in paying more for nothing extra.

OK for someone with no electrical / electronic training

About two thirds of this book is dedicated to general electrical and electronic training. If you already have that training (as I do), then you should look for another book that deals more with its automotive applications.

Required textbook for not one but two of my automotive classes.

This is the required text for my Automotives Electronics class as well as a future class so it was a good investment to buy it. My instructor adores this textbook series by James D. Halderman. He uses the power point presentations in class. Some of the pictures are... inaccurate to the point of being either extra funny or downright dangerous from a safety standpoint but my instructor is careful to point these things out to us. We all assume this is because the artist isn't actually an automotive tech.

I just got the book, but there are no CDs
the description states ""The accompanying audio CDs include audio exercises--performed by native speakers--that reinforce communicative skills.""

Now I Have to spend money elsewhere to get what is owed to me.

Easy to follow

I choosed rating 4/5 stars as I find the book very handy and easy to follow. I got 2 books, one for me and the other for my hubby.

The only thing I dislike is the "spelling" on pronounciation when a chinese language being transliterate into roman words. It is confusing. For example. xian, should be pronounce "chi-an" ... or so that is what the CD taught me. I understand that perhaps mandarin pronounciation are difficult to be spelt out into roman because of the pronounciation needs to take alot of practice on how to control your mouths and the different focus of your mouth has been empowered in other to produce "natural" sound.. Given the way these pronounciation spelt in this book, certainly does not help. Another example, "zhongguo"..(which means China) is not pronounce as how it is spelt. It is pronounce "Chong-guO" and not ZHOng-guo. or the word "Qing", in which you have to pronounce "Ching". It gets confusing when you read the book only without the listening to the CDs otherwise it is a perfect book for those who would like to learn how to speak mandarin.

I would totally recommend this book, nevertheless =) Although, I wished that the spelling on the pronounciation can be improved.
