NEBULA AWARD WINNER
I wrote this tale of aliens who invade Earth and take possession of our minds in January, 1967 for the difficult, demanding editor Damon Knight, who was doing a much-admired annual science fiction anthology called ORBIT. Damon liked it but put me through four or five rewrites before he was satisfied – a very hard way to make $120. But the story did get better with each rewrite, I had to concede.
It appeared in the fourth issue of ORBIT in 1968 and promptly won me the Nebula award for best short story of the year. It came close to winning me the Hugo, too. Then it was picked for a string of anthologies and was bought for movie production. The movie was never made, but I got the rights back and it has been optioned for filming all over again. And so, by and large, it does seem worthwhile to have done all those rewrites for ORBIT all those long years ago.

Silverberg's version of "The Drunkard's Walk"

Before Silverberg made this short story there was another short story called "The Drunkard's Walk". It was the same theme. Aliens beings inhabit the soul of an unfortunate person and live through them. In that story it's discovered that the aliens can't hold their drink and the human race has to be midly drunk all the time else aliens will take over their bodies.
Silverberg does not have such a happy ending. Silverberg writes in the first person about a man who had just been "ridden". It reads sort of like a reverse detective novel. The man knows he has gaps in his life. Also, treating the "ridden" as like an illness, he has to take care of his body. The aliens are known to use humans to eat dung; the unfortunate human knows this fact but they are spared the experence.
Slowly the man peices together the experence of being ridden. Usually a person has no experence of the event. However, the man is convinced that it is something more and finds his lover through a good deal of work. In that time period, Silverberg uses his novel to show us how a society could adapt to being occasionally taken over by aliens.
The ending of the novel is to show a new twist on the alien's possession. They learn how to manipulate the feelings of a person and to enjoy the revulsion of one person plus their heartbreak.
This novel is enjoyable and a quick read. It deserved the science fiction award.

Lose yourself

The idea of losing control of my body is a fairly common medical fear of mine. But what if you lose control of it to another being, who does with it as it will? And what if this is a common occurrence, so integral to daily life that laws exist to protect those "ridden" by their "passengers" in the aftermath?
In this story, anyone can suddenly lose their body to unfathomable beings, who proceed to go on joy-rides, full of sex, gluttony, and violence. In the aftermath of the narrator's latest possession, he somehow recalls the events of the possession, and reconnects with his sexual partner, who was similarly overtaken. Despite numerous social taboos, they begin to form a real bond, until the whims of the Passengers impose themselves again.
Not precisely chilling--it's so out of the realm of possibility that I couldn't be made even slightly nervous--but definitely intriguing. There's a bit too much of the "manic pixie dream girl" feel to the courtship for my tastes, but others may not even notice.

Over 30 years after I read it the power is still there.

I am now almost 70 years old, and I read this story when I was in my 30's. I have read it only a couple of times but I still remember it vividly. What makes it so gripping is the position of the narrator and the strong emotion he projects, as well as the author's ability to immediately make the reader part of the narrator's world.. As I write this I now remember why I was so gripped by another story of a completely different author and genre, but it hit me the same way from the first page. I read Lee Child's Jack Reacher novel The Hard Way and was immediately plunger into Jack Reacher's world, just as I was plunged into the world of the narrator of Passengers. Read both and appreciate the writing as well as the plot.
