But the cause involved great expense, and much sacrifice of time and trouble on the part of the good friends of St. Teresa who had taken up the affair so warmly. Gonzalez de Aranda was deputed to go to Madrid and urge on the suit, and on the part of the town other deputies were sent. At last a commission was appointed to examine the affair on the spot, and this again could not be carried out without expense. Teresa tells us that our Lord provided for all her needs in a marvellous manner. The influence of the Corregidor and his friends was exerted to the utmost, and most people were afraid to oppose him in a matter which he had so much at heart.
