It's as if I've paid for a marketing brochure

I've written another review for this (e)book directly from my Kindle but apparently it didn't came through as it's nowhere to be found.

I gave the book a 2 star review because I can't believe the amount on hype around it nor the large amount of 5 stars (which were basically the main reason I've bought the book).

Regarding the actual content, the 'novel' thing would be that it's almost a collection of blog posts. So if you don't want to read too much, you have some nice bite-size wisdom. The information isn't mind-blowing though and if you've read one of the many sites/blogs on the internet about entrepreneurship, you'll find there is little 'fresh' information in there.

But the most annoying thing about the book is that it's almost a marketing brochure about TechStars. They don't miss *a single chance* to tell you again that it's TechStars we are talking about and that person A worked with them, for them, was funded by them, etc. So, usually at the beginning and the end you have some TechStars 'commercials' paragraphs and if possible in the middle too. Now, if you read what I've said above that the articles are quite short, it means that if you try to read more of the book, you'll be bombarded by TechStars advertisement every few minutes (I haven't actually counted how much it takes to read one article, but it isn't that much).

So, I would have preferred much more if the book would have focused on the content, which is decent, instead of trying so hard to sell TechStars.

I wish one could ask a refund on ebooks (it seems to be possible now that I've googled it, but on the Kindle interface I couldn't do it) because this continuous TechStars ad was so distracting while reading that I could have stopped after the first articles. Anyhow, now it's too late as it's been over a month since I got the book...

Nothing to see here, move on

Essentially it's a collection of blog posts, none of which you couldn't find online. If you like having your biz blogs printed out, this might save you the cost of the ink. There is little actionable knowledge here. It's fine inspiration, but I don't need to pay $30 bucks to get that.

Honestly?

I read a lot. I used to be a programmer. From 2000 til 2004 I worked the web.
I have MBA's in Economics and International Finance.
This book, I could highlight a sentence a chapter to get the gist of what it's saying.
It's an elaborate advertisement.
A pat on the back book.
A yearbook of entertainment to whoever wrote it and whoever participated in the program.
I bought this book because my uncle said it was great.
I have a library of over 800 books; None of them have to be great if I get one good idea.
This book, I didn't even get that.
I have never written a book review.
This is my first.
First time I felt like I really should.
This book is like business 101.
It doesn't really tell you how to do anything.
This hasn't any more content then an inviting cover.

Queer life in all its forms

'The Giddy Death of the Gays and the Strange Demise of Straights' is about queer life in a drab town, and features within its pages a violent homophobic attack, a white pride rally and a torched nightclub. But it's a testament to Redfern Jon Barrett's vibrant writing that the overall message is one of love, hope and happiness.

The novel introduces several young characters each with their own perspectives on getting by, ranging from stressed-out postgrads to a manic queer perfume counter assistant whose boredom and frustration get relieved first on unwitting customers, then through his own life adventures. They make friends, fall in love and fall out, and these bonds tangle up and strangle any conventional definition of what a relationship 'really' is. At the heart of these is a deep, non-sexual relationship between two heterosexual men, and Barrett's writing devotes as much seriousness and passion to this bond as any other in the book.

Witty and readable, 'Giddy Death' has something genuinely new to say and drives it through the mouths of its wonderful characters. Maybe sometimes the world around you can seem grim, but it's all about the people you're with.

A romcom with a difference

A very well written novel that is disarmingly readable. It was so engaging I ended up reading it in one sitting. Barrett manages to cram so much in: great story-lines, social commentary, complex characters and some interesting and thought-provoking ideas about the nature of love, relationships and sexual identity. There are some beautifully expressed moments of self-discovery which I found particularly moving, and I'm certain any reader who has found themselves at odds with mainstream conventions of gender, sexuality and relationships will be equally touched. I thoroughly recommend reading it!

Dark & witty romantic comedy

If dark romantic comedy were a genre, this would be it. Giddy Death is funny and vibrant, and despite its dark wit still manages to be hopeful and charming. The story follows a handful of disparate twenty-somethings living in a fading small town populated with drunks and racists, as they figure out how their relationships do (or should) work. The path they strike out on diverges from the expected, a quickly-changing situation moving from same-sex platonic love to a polyamorous trio.
The strength of the characters carries you through the ups and downs, and I left them feeling quite uplifted.

great read

Finding my feet.

An amazing book -I read in 2 days...and I had to "do" things...."unputdownable"... written from the heart, full of laughs, tears,despair...a book documenting a nightmare come true and one woman's amazing battle to turn it into a miracle.
A "must buy" for anyone having a tough time, a truthful account...she does not have to lie...and written with the best will in the world....to cure paralysis...you need to buy it and read it....do not lend it....make all your friends buy their own copies.....this woman will change the face of paralysis as sure as any scientist................back her....buy it now......this is not the last we will hear from Claire Lomas...mark my words...xx

Read by Lesley: A superb read

A great book, could not put it down for long as it was, witty, funny and of course very emotional.
I watched Claire when she was eventing, and saw her many times competing.
I knew most of the places she mentioned and now know her aunt Sue, who is just as nice.
She is a person who would never give up against all the odds. Taking on new challenges too.
The challenges she faced were imense. She is part of a great family and also
found happiness with a great caring guy and now a lovely little girl.
The book paints an excellant picture of all of this.

Grant Morrison Being Grand

Honey, get the Multiverse: Cosmic Neighborhood Watch crew together because we're having a BBQ.

Look, I know that some people are going to have some difficulty with this series, this comic in particular. It's got a lot of moving pieces (there's 51 earths in this multiverse afterall) and they're all being intangled together. I started out with "Multiversity the Just" it only has one planet highlighted on the side. Then I read Multiversity the Society of Super-Heroes, which has 2. I actually didn't start to read those until Multiversity the Multiversity came out, but I still saved it for last (it had just come out for you later review readers).

I was a little disappointed with myself because I was like "how could I have been such an idiot to miss work by Morrison?" But I got over it pretty quick. The order that I read it in is what makes the most sense to me, it's like a slow drip from one planet to many planets being combined. But A LOT of stuff in the comics won't make sense to folks, and to that I'm gonna say "duh" they're combining universes and even parodying Marvel Comics in it also. If you're combining dozens of universes into a handful of comics, a lot of it will be confusing, and a lot of it isn't intended to make sense.

I think that this particular issue suffers from being a little choppy. It feels very rushed, where as the other two felt like a smooth ride into their climax. But that doesn't mean that it's not one hell of a fun ride because it's meant to be confusing after all. Imagine being the characters in the comic and being thrown around from one world to another, unsure of the inhabitants and what you're going to run into. Morrison is making you suffer with them. Remember, the comic is communicating with you and you're being sucked into it... Just like every other character who is reading comics, in their comic.

Don't let other reviews on this comic discourage you from reading it. It introduces a VERY important character. Plus, it introduces black Superman. He's my all time favorite Superman because he's practical, he's smart and he's got a kind of grit I haven't found from other Supes. He's not the only one though, a slew of other well known and veritable characters are brought into this "monster mash".

Stick around for the ride. I don't want to give any spoilers because every page is pretty darn awesome. Get this issue.

About the Author
David Avison is Distinguished Professor of Information Systems at ESSEC Business School, near Paris, France after being Professor at the School of Management at Southampton University for nine years. He has also held posts at Brunel and Aston Universities in England, and the University of Technology Sydney and University of New South Wales in Australia, and elsewhere. He is President-elect of the Association of Information Systems (AIS). He is joint editor of Blackwell Science's Information Systems Journal now in its eighteenth volume, rated as a 'core' international journal. So far, twenty-five books are to his credit including the fourth edition of the well-used text Information Systems Development: Methodologies, Techniques and Tools (jointly authored with Guy Fitzgerald).� He has published a large number of research papers in learned journals, edited texts and conference papers. He was Chair of the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) 8.2 group on the impact of IS/IT on organisations and society and is now vice chair of IFIP technical committee 8. He was past President of the UK Academy for Information Systems and also chair of the UK Heads and Professors of IS and is presently member of the IS Senior Scholars Forum. He was joint programme chair of the International Conference in Information Systems (ICIS) in Las Vegas (previously also research programme stream chair at ICIS Atlanta), joint programme chair of IFIP TC8 conference at Santiago Chile, programme chair of the IFIPWG8.2 conference in Amsterdam, panels chair for the European Conference in Information Systems at Copenhagen and publicity chair for the entity-relationship conference in Paris and chair of several other UK and European conferences. He will be joint program chair of the IFIP TC8 conference in Milan, Italy in 2008. He also acts as consultant and has most recently worked with a leading manufacturer developing their IT/IS strategy. He researches in the area of information systems development and more generally on information systems in their natural organizational setting, in particular using action research, though he has also used a number of other qualitative research approaches.

Helpful for project management class at OSU

This book was extremely helpful to have on hand as homework, quizzes and tests all came directly out of it for my MSIS project management course at Oklahoma State University. Definitely purchase this is you attend this university.
